The paris apartment genre6/12/2023 ![]() Muir simply lacks the writing prowess to execute these choices successfully, both in terms of their logic and their intrigue. ![]() So, although I approached “Harrow the Ninth” with a chip on my shoulder, I was willing to go all in if Muir hadn’t made the heinous decision to alternate between two perspectives, one of which is written in the second person. Unfortunately for Tamsyn Muir (and for me), the (SPOILER ALERT) second book does not include Gideon, the protagonist of the first book, and perhaps one of the most entertaining characters ever written. It pains me to say that I did not finish “Harrow the Ninth.” I was enamored with its predecessor, “Gideon the Ninth” - I laughed, I screamed, I cried - and safe to say, it was a tremendous letdown to open up this sequel. ![]() Here are some books we hope to finish, and some we hope to never read again. In either case, it haunts us readers long after we’ve cast it aside. The corner of the bookmark pokes out from between the pages like a forlorn wave goodbye. Sometimes it’s just not meant to be, but we still feel an odd guilt every time we return a book to the shelf without finishing it. Why do some books resist our attention? Maybe the issue comes somewhere in the middle, in the relationship between reader and novel. ![]()

Elizabeth of York by Alison Weir6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I found it a powerful and well written story, and was very pleased to have the opportunity to read and review it.Īlison Weir is a historian with a deep knowledge and understanding of the Tudor period. She emerges as more than just a figurehead, a marriageable pawn, but a woman who had to take action from a young age. ![]() This is a story which focuses on Elizabeth from her childhood and many of the challenges she faced, her mixed fortunes and her losses, her loves and actions. Not that in this political marriage Henry was rendered totally secure on the throne there were those who rose against him, sometimes claiming to represent the lost Princes in the Tower, the younger brothers of Elizabeth that were much missed. She was nonetheless the mother of the famous or infamous Henry VIII, and her marriage to Henry VII brought to an end most of the separation between the Houses of York and Lancaster. Elizabeth of York, daughter of a King, sister of a tragically short lived one, and wife to a third, has often been dismissed as merely a wife for political reasons who was caught up by circumstances and stronger characters. Elizabeth of York: The Last White Rose by Alison WeirĪ new series of novels featuring three generations of the Tudors is an enormous treat for fans of historical fiction, and this portrait of a woman, a “Mother, Survivor, Queen” is as carefully and vividly written as any of Weir’s other novels. ![]()

Black Ice by Anne Stuart6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Brilliant characterizations and a suitably moody ambience drive this dark tale of unlikely love. I was so happy and then weirded out for a minute that the evil bastard wasn't going to be around any more. Not every little thing is told right away and I'm sure there is going to be some things later on down the road that might be brought up in other books. I can't say for the rest of the series yet, but so far they are wonderful!įor a good bit of the story we are told about what Jamie and Claire had been doing during their years apart. Anya seton 1944 novel6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Her novel Devil Water concerns James, the luckless Earl of Derwentwater and his involvement with the Jacobite rising of 1715. Seton published her first novel, My Theodosia, in 1941. In 2003, Katherine was chosen as the 95th best British novel of all time in a nationwide poll conducted by the BBC. ![]() Most of her novels have been recently republished, several with forewords by Philippa Gregory. Three of her books are classics in their genre and continue in their popularity to the present: Katherine, the story of Katherine Swynford, the mistress and eventual wife of John of Gaunt, and their children, who were the direct ancestors of the Tudors, Stuarts, and the modern British royal family Green Darkness, the story of a modern couple plagued by their past life incarnations and The Winthrop Woman about the notorious Elizabeth Fones, niece and daughter-in-law of John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Seton's historical novels were noted for how extensively she researched the historical facts, and some of them were best-sellers: Dragonwyck (1944) and Foxfire (1950) were both made into Hollywood films. ![]()

Temperament isacoff6/11/2023 ![]() "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Filled with original insights, fascinating anecdotes, and portraits of some of the greatest geniuses of all time, Temperament is that rare book that will delight the novice and expert alike. ![]() The contentious adoption of the modern tuning system known as equal temperament called into question beliefs that had lasted nearly two millenia-and also made possible the music of Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy, and all who followed. ![]() In this engaging and accessible account, Stuart Isacoff leads us through the battles over that scale, placing them in the context of quarrels in the worlds of art, philosophy, religion, politics and science. Indeed, from the time of the Ancient Greeks through the eras of Renaissance scientists and Enlightenment philosophers, the relationship between the notes of the musical scale was seen as a key to the very nature of the universe. ![]() Few music lovers realize that the arrangement of notes on today's pianos was once regarded as a crime against God and nature, or that such legendary thinkers as Pythagoras, Plato, da Vinci, Galileo, Kepler, Descartes, Newton and Rousseau played a role in the controversy. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() They are obviously not key characters in the film so naming them seems unnecessary. We are not given the names of the other two young Montagues or the third Capulet. The Capulets are slicker, controlled and Tybalt especially has a toned physique. The Montague boys are relaxed in appearance they wear Hawaiian shirts and act like foolish young men. The Montague’s are all cast as distinctly white Americans this diversity in casting seems to reflect our modern multicultural society. Tybalt’s role appears to have been paired with that of Benvolio, as they are the most prominent members of their families. Tybalt in particular is named as ‘the prince of cats’ and has an overpowering air about him. The casting of the Capulet gang is interesting they are all Hispanic in appearance and unpleasant in character. Mercutio, Romeo’s best friend, is black and acts like a typical 20th century young black male. There are some surprising choices from the casting department. We get a very different cast from the one we would predict Romeo and Juliet are white, as we would have thought, but with American accents. Luhrmann has chosen to cast a black American female newsreader, contradicting our expectations of a white English cast throughout. The opening of the film features a 20th century television news report. ![]() Baz Luhrmann has used a vast array of media techniques to attract a modern audience to his film adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. ![]()
